Here i go again,When i was at the show last week i was talking to a lad from essex who was in exactly the same boat as me,he went there to learn, whilst we where watching the new cb multi been put to the test he mentioned a book of mortice locks.I beleive it was this one here the "ICL Mortice Lock Manual" he did say that for us it would be a bible, new to the trade it was fantastic as you could identify a mortice lock from colour gauge etc and it would be easier to pick,i thought when a mortice lock was in a door you have 1 key hole not much to look at, and lets say the installer painted the lock "pink" and put a really tight fitting plate over the key hole!!! I understand that none of this beats experience butits also a lot of money for a book ,any thoughts....

Too expensive for what it is. The one Peter mentions is a great starting point and a fracction of the cost and can be added to as new locks come out.  You will alkso have access to all these drill points when you have attended the course Lee in April, it's all in the Locksmiths Only section of the site.

In time you will gain all this knowledge and stat to recognise all the different locks first hand.

If you go for the Inglis books get both. Ther are two, one for non curtain locks, and one for curtain locks.

I've got both the ICL and the one on eBay. The CD one covers many more locks, and in much greater detail too! It's easier to find lock you're IDing as well, as it's laid out logically. Part of the problem with the ICL one, is it covers both Deadlock, and Sashlock versions of most of them, rather than simply covering more locks. It is still a good book, with lots of useful information. It's just the other one does it so much better.

You can get Gary via his site Elton Lock Services.  Contact him direct, it will be cheaper than ebay, but the books he will only sell via Lulu.  Great books.  Tell him Dean sent you (he's a long term associate).:)

No problem Lee, hope you like it.

£20 is a good price for your money you get the mortice id manual, a set of gauge keys and a dvd showing how to use the gauge keys properly.

I think we can safely say that Gary's manuals/CD's are by far the best ones out there, and at a good price as well.

Just to point out though, as I am sure evreyone knows, were only looking to drill as a last resort, the job dictates, or there is a fault with the lock?

The manuals are also good for getting an insight into the lock being picked. How the levers sit, closed or open ended levers etc.
